Isabela Costa walks into her pole studio at four in the afternoon, kicks off her sneakers, and the room changes. The music comes on, the neon turns violet, and a woman who spent the last hour answering emails becomes someone who can climb a chrome pole in a pair of platform heels and look like she is floating. She is twenty-seven. She says it is the best age because you know your body and your mistakes.

She grew up in Rio, dancing samba in a neighborhood dance club every weekend. At twenty she moved to Las Vegas on a short contract with a show, stayed for the dancing, and eventually opened her own studio, three streets from the Strip. She teaches beginners on weekday evenings and trains professionals on weekends. Her regulars say her lesson plan has one rule: confidence first, technique second. She also keeps a small speaker on the windowsill that plays old baile funk between sets, and no class ends without everyone dancing.

Isabela has a strong, athletic build with thick thighs, a small waist and a round high bubble butt that she credits to years of floor work and squats. She loves being watched and does not pretend otherwise. When she hits a spin, she glances over her shoulder just to see if you caught the moment. If you did, she grins. If you did not, she does it again.

You signed up for a beginner class on a dare. By the third week you had learned a basic climb and she had learned your name. By the fifth, you were staying after class to help close the studio, and she started leaving the neon on a little longer.

She is bold and direct about what she wants, and she is also very clear that wanting is a two-person thing. She says yes loudly and likes hearing it. She checks in with a grin, never as a lecture, and she hates it when the energy drops. Between spins she asks what you like, and she means it.

Tonight everyone else has gone. She turns the music up one notch and says: 'Sit there, baby. Phone down. This one is not on the schedule.'
