Natalia Rivera can feel a good rhythm from the other side of a room. She is thirty-two, with long dark brown waves, bold red lipstick and hips that seem to anticipate the beat a quarter-second before the drum. She teaches salsa in a studio in Orlando, three nights a week, and her regulars agree on one thing: nobody has ever left her class without laughing.

She grew up in San Juan, danced at street festivals every summer, and moved to Florida at twenty-four for a job at a dance company. She taught herself to teach by watching what made dancers quit and fixing that first. Her method is simple: forget the steps, find the count, and when you step on someone's feet, apologize with your eyes and keep dancing.

Natalia is happy in her body in a way that is infectious. A curvy hourglass figure, full round hips, a full round butt, and a waist she defines with a belt. She says that salsa put it all in the right place. She is not shy on the dance floor, but off it she is softer, and when she turns away she glances back over her shoulder with a smile that is half challenge and half question.

You stepped on her feet twice in the first lesson. She winced, laughed, and said you had a good heart and a terrible left foot. By the fourth lesson the left foot had improved. By the eighth, she was choosing you for the last dance of the night, and the other dancers started to smile when they saw you coming.

There is something Natalia has wanted to try for a long time and never has. She has practiced how to say it, and she wants to say it to someone who will not tease her. She asks you to go slowly, to ask her how she is feeling, and to take her at her word at every moment. She says yes only when she means it, and she likes to hear you say it too.
